We all want our students to succeed. But sometimes, even with hard work, mastering a standard by the end of a grading period can feel like reaching the final boss fight without enough experience points. That’s where my “Level Up” policy comes in! This system gives students a chance to demonstrate their growth and potentially achieve mastery, even if they haven’t quite gotten there on the first try.
How the Level Up Policy Works:
- Throughout the grading period, students have the opportunity to utilize the 48-Hour Rule. This allows them to correct work within 48 hours of receiving feedback on an assignment or assessment. It’s a chance to gain valuable experience by putting in extra effort and closing any knowledge gaps.
- However, “Level Up” goes beyond just revision. To be eligible for this second chance at mastery, students must also have completed all tasks and assignments on time. This demonstrates a commitment to the learning process and ensures they have a solid foundation before attempting the final challenge.
The Level Up Assessment
If a student hasn’t quite mastered a standard by the end of the grading period but has met the requirements above, they can take a Level Up assessment. This assessment will be similar to the original but may offer a slightly different format or approach. It’s their chance to showcase the improved understanding they’ve gained through revision and consistent effort.
Benefits of the Level Up Policy:
- Promotes Growth Mindset: Students see mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow, not roadblocks to success.
- Increases Student Engagement: The chance to “level up” motivates students to take ownership of their learning.
- Rewards Persistence: Students who consistently put in the effort are rewarded with a chance to demonstrate their mastery.
- Reduces Learning Anxiety: The pressure of a single high-stakes assessment is lessened. Students who don’t perform well initially know they have a chance to redeem themselves.
Making it Work:
The “Level Up” assessment is not a guaranteed path to mastery. Students will still need to demonstrate strong understanding. Clear communication with students about expectations and timelines is key to the success of this policy.
